Maybe it’s the 12 years I’ve spent in Athens post-Aeroplane Over The Sea but I could give a fuck about Jeff Mangum finally playing in town again. Also imagining the crowd at those sold out 40 Watt shows gives me night terrors.
I’ve been wondering about this too. I mean yeah, I like the album. Yes, it is wonderfully whimsical. Yes it is influential for many. My first 33 1/3 book was the NMH book. Yes, it was good. Yes it borderline blew me away the first time I heard it shoot out of a speaker. I guess I’m establishing that I like NMH. Still, I don’t see what all the years of fuss and mythos are all about. ITAOTS was just another local album that new kids didn’t know about until that Magnet article rated it the most influential album of the ’90s. That’s when the fervor started. It’s still a great album to open the windows, eat dinner, throw on the record player when the city is on the verge of Spring.
