We Versus the Shark: “Slide”

(I found this album at the thrift store, oops.)

!!!

i almost bought this album at a thrift store even though i already have it

i bought mine at schoolkids or wuxtry, i don’t remember, in 2006 lololol

The last time I nearly barfed while party dancing at a show was a WVTS show at Caledonia Lounge. It was July or August. Me, Rob & Jace went bonkers up front and dropped like flies from the heat. Weplayed with WVTS at Tasty World and Sam Shark gave me a cdr copy of this album and said to buy an actual copy when I could afford it. I kept my word and bought a real copy a few weeks later.

What an asshole. I added the last image.

I met this old guy at work a few weeks ago. We stood over a patch of jasmine and commented on how wonderful it smelled. “You know how sometimes you smell something and it takes you to memories of places you’ve never been? That’s what jasmine does to me” he said. I agreed and said it reminded me of childhood memories in my grandmother’s backyard. “Well, it reminds me of a French whorehouse” he said and continued “I hope they weren’t two in the same, ha!” (referring to my grandma’s house).
When I listen to El Hollin it reminds me of two places. You know that time in late Spring/early Summer when there’s a slight chill at night? Couple that feeling, time and place with the morning mist that rises off a mountain lake. That’s one place El Hollin takes me. it is calm, natural and pure.
The other place is riding a bicycle through a archetypal middle-class neighborhood from my youth; the kind of neighborhood I dreamed of calling home when I was a kid. Riding my bike through those streets and imagining all the fantastic, wholesome, family moments that are probably happening inside those houses only I can’t see in because the shades are drawn and I’m just kind of lost in the uncertainty of the situation.
Yep, these are the two places El Hollin takes me. Sure, it’s a haphazard combination of “memories” but they are clear. Some people refer to El Hollin as a haphazard band and that’s fine too but like, IT IS WORKING. The songs are rocket ships, time machines, a tear that reveals alternate realities. An uncertain, idealized suburbia and the calm magic of nature are but two parts of this universe.  El Hollin delivers the purifying harmony of these places and I like this feeling.

I saw El Hollin for the first time perhaps a year ago. I rushed home to type my feelings about the band’s music and my computer crapped out and I lost all my words. It was late, I was exhausted and didn’t have it in me to start all over. It took a year but here I am again, exhausted after another late-night magical springtime Athens show and my computer very nearly pooped out again.

“achieving very little in the way of any measurable success or popularity.

aside from that one long trip to play a single performance they have never undertaken a proper tour.”

For a while all their songs were in the key of B. After that, all the new songs were in the key of C.”

Hey Friends! I have a new EP up for digital download. All proceeds go to purchasing a van so I can go on tour.

I’ve recently run into a rash of bad luck and had to scrap my van, after spending all my savings on it. Life hands you lemons I guess…

Anyway, I decided to record this EP as a means to build up a van fund. ALL THE MONEY MADE FROM THIS EP WILL GO TOWARD PURCHASING A TOURING VEHICLE. That being said, if you like my music, and want to help me play in your town, which I really want to do!!, please consider throwing in a couple extra bucks, that is if it is worth it to you. “

RIP van.

This is a great song and I have a version of this on my exercise mix at the Y.

The Agenda “Shake! Shake! Scream!”

for anyone that cares here is a link for every song my band ever recorded to download for free.

I remember calling WUOG to request this song and they told me they couldn’t play it.

Holy Coast

Here’s a link to the WFMU FMA for an album I recorded three (!) years ago. It’s all first takes. I recorded it in February of ‘10. I can’t wait to get set up here and start recording again.

edit: UH OH, there’s a band in Tennessee going around as “Holy Coast.” S and I were thinking of touring under “Holy Coast” this summer. We were also thinking of “Bear Bones” but it’s taken by a British band. I’m leaning toward “Torn Sheets.”

Music room is coming together. Everything is sorted and organized. I need some wall hangers to get the guitars up off the floor. Need to frame some flyers and get them on the wall too. I pinned a bunch of old NASCAR flags on the ceiling above the drums and amps. I need to sleep but I’m all amped up because I was watching Unknown Passage while sorting through boxes.
